Our diverse team of health care professionals represents a variety of difference disciplines, each with safe and effective options for the treatment of acne. With more options and a more holistic approach, you're more likely to find relief from the embarrassment of acne.
Acne Basics
Acne occurs when the pores of the skin become clogged with too much oil, dead skin cells, and/or bacteria. There are many factors that can be the underlying cause; these include: stress, heredity, some medications, heat, hormonal changes, birth control pills, humidity, friction, cosmetics, moisturizers, and others.
Teenagers are the most commonly affected group when it comes to acne, but people of any age can struggle with this condition. The whiteheads, blackheads and inflamed pimples usually appear on the face, but may also appear on the shoulders, back, chest, and arms.
Acne Treatments
Over-the-counter washes, creams, and gels are unfortunately relatively ineffective for the treatment of acne. At Urban Body, we offer viable alternatives for acne care. In Edmonton, some of our more popular treatments include chemical peels, laser treatments, and radiofrequency (RF).
BLU-U®
BLU-U® is a unique blue light that delivers clearer skin by destroying the P.acnes bacteria – the root cause of acne flare-ups. During treatment, a patient sits in front of the blue light for a few minutes, with 1 to 2 sessions usually scheduled per week. Treatment is painless and is a popular alternative to medications and antibiotics.
Levulan®
Levulan® is a topical solution that can be applied to the skin, making the skin cells more sensitive to light. The skin is then exposed to the BLU-U light, causing a reaction that shrinks the sebaceous glands. Combining Levulan and BLU-U may produce more dramatic outcomes, particularly for patients with more severe forms of acne. A tingling or burning sensation may be felt during the procedure and some redness or swelling may be present afterwards. In addition to delivering excellent cosmetic results, the treatment requires no prescription to fill and no daily medication to take.
Chemical Peels
Chemical peels clear clogged pores, reduce inflammation, and kill the bacteria that cause acne. A series of treatments and thorough home care are usually required for optimal results. Light acne peels are usually performed by our medical assistants and generally take only 10 to 15 minutes. While your face may appear pink after a mild peel, there is no downtime and makeup can be applied immediately. Most acne requires medical-strength peels to achieve improvement, those that are available at our practice, but not through a typical spa.
Laser Treatments
Laser energy can be used to kill the bacteria responsible for the acne. This procedure can clear 70% to 90% of moderate, inflammatory acne in 4 to 6 weeks. Results usually last for 4 to 8 months; after that, occasional maintenance treatments may be necessary.
Radiofrequency (RF)
Research is currently being performed to assess the use of a radiofrequency (RF) device called Accent™ for the treatment of moderate and severe acne. RF has shown very promising early results in the treatment of both acne sc arring and active acne. Early reports indicate that RF produces results in 1 to 4 months after treatment. Often, a single 20 minute treatment under topical (cream) anesthesia is all that is required.
Other Options
In addition to peels, lasers, and RF, there are other options for the treatment of acne. These include:
- Birth control pills
- Accutane
- Antibiotics
- Retin-A, Tri-Luma Cream®, AFA® gel
- Hormonal medication
- Medical skin care products
- Cortisone injections
- Microdermabrasion
- Facials
- Excision (surgical removal)
- Non-comedogenic makeup
- Dietary and lifestyle education
Often, acne leaves scars even after it has cleared. For patients troubled by acne scars, we offer laser resurfacing and injectable fillers. Your skilled skin care professional at Urban Body will help determine which method of acne treatment and acne scar treatment can best accomplish your goals.
